Matilda meets an even higher level of fantasy and supernatural themes. This is a story of finding your people as an outcast, standing up for what you deserve, and wanting to be treated with respect. A lot of the topics are on the harsher end for a middle grade book, but I think it definitely achieved what it set out to do and the writing makes you feel strong empathy for all the characters. Especially if you've ever found yourself in a situation even remotely like theirs.
Graphic: Child abuse and Torture
Moderate: Forced institutionalization and Abandonment
Minor: Ableism and Stalking
The R slur is used in this book
