Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson
Did not finish book.
DNF around 200 pages. My issue with this series (and Brandon Sanderson in general) isn't his slow exposition or the long dives into his characters. He is a good writer but he doesn't push any boundaries.
When you are writing fantasy you start with a blank slate. You can make whatever you want. In this world you have a caste system based on eye color, straight and attractive men and women, and tons of tropes: the grizzled handsome war veteran, the brilliant inventor, the slave, the young powerful woman with an exasperated mentor, the dedicated surgeon. Sanderson doesn't change or challenge these tropes.
There are some interesting magical elements (spren, the Thrill) but it doesn't make up for the familiar world in which they occurred.
