A year ago, Ava left her toddler Abi secured in her pushchair while doing a couple chores upstairs. When she came back down, her daughter was gone, the front door wide open. A year later, the newish neighbors, the Lovegoods, are throwing a housewarming-see-our-renovations party. Ava has hardly been out since Abi disappeared, except for the necessary things and a stay in a mental hospital before the birth of her second child, Fred. She doesn't really want to go to the party, but she does to please her husband. But while there, some things come to light that make Ava think that the day, a year ago, didn't happen quite the way she'd thought after all.

On the whole, I like Ava. Her, her husband, and her (small) friend group seem completely normal and like people you would know. But now she's a mess, and very understandably so. As things start to come out, she almost seems to go crazy, but it feels so raw and real. Her husband is also featured, as well as his/their best friend, Neil. I have to say, they all feel real, complete with some flaws that come diretly into play during the story.

What seems really simple on the face of it is actually a complete, twisted knot, rather like when you put a neatly wrapped cord in your purse and five minutes later you take it out and there's 5 knots and you're not sure it will ever go straight again. It was definitely a binge-able book, as I finished it in a 24-hr span of time and stayed up late to read it, and had a set of twists and reveals that shocked a bit! I really enjoyed it.

Tamsin Kennard did a really good job.

I really enjoyed this book, and I think it will probably stay with me a bit longer than many thrillers just for the kinds of twists and turns it took. Anyone who loves a particularly twisty book will probably enjoy this!
