Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

5.0

Wow. Just wow. When @bookedwithbecca tells you to read a book, YOU READ THE BOOK!

Take My Hand is based on true events and follows Civil Townsend, a nurse at a women’s clinic in Alabama. She eventually blows the whistle on her clinic for abhorrent practices inflicted on poor Black girls and women (I can’t say anymore, because it’s an important plot point of the book).

Take My Hand is a heavy read, but it’s an important one. I learned a lot, and I’m sad to say I didn’t know all of this beforehand. And I should have. It’s infuriating that our government took control of and forced medical procedures on the poor and underrepresented.

Books like Take My Hand are so important for others to read. I also encourage you to check out Becca’s review and her thoughts on censorship; she sums it up very well!

Overall—read this book!
