This book and I did not click. In a nutshell, it felt skeletal, staged and predictable, and I didn't connect with any of the characters.

What do I mean by that? Well, I felt like I was dropped into the story and told I just had to care about the characters with their problems. And every character had an issue...and POV. Each bit felt like it was a setup for something later, and I KNEW what it was setting up. For example, I knew from the moment I read that
SpoilerGideon liked studying SAT vocabulary and Kyle didn't like English that Gideon was going to help Kyle study.
Those notes Gideon wrote? I knew they were going to be found and cause trouble. And each POV was so quick and completely focused on getting the reader to the next step instead of building up the characters and world. Connect-the-dots storytelling, basically.

Maybe the story had potential to be cute and emotional, but I wasn't feeling anything but bored ΒΌ of the way in. Just me?
