“Love isn’t a choice. You fall for the person, not their chromosomes.”
This was such a beautiful and eye-opening book for me! I absolutely devoured it in a single sitting, I was so hooked to the writing style and the story.
I loved the voice of our main character Krissy and her complete story of how she discovered and dealt with the fact that she was an intersex person. So many times we see that she is completely torn over her identity and who she really is and I feel that it was a really important portrayal. Speaking of characters, I really loved Darren and Jessica because throughout the book they saw Kristin for what she truly was and didn't let the fact that she is intersex define her at all. Darren was adorable and supportive and I like how their romance was kind of slow and minor and more importance was given to Kristen's story as a whole.
I'm not sure what to think about Faith because even though she was a really nice and sweet girl she didn't stand up for Kristen much, especially when she needed her and chose to take Vee's side? I mean she could have talked sense into Vee but nope, she remained a passive character at most and it honestly wouldn't have made a difference whether she was in the story or not. And I really disliked Vee's character, especially what she did to Kristen and the way that she never even once apologised but was forgiven in the end? I think that was the only part of this story that didn't sit well with me.
Also we see such a supportive father who is ready to do anything for his girl. He spent hours researching into intersex people and their lifestyle and was ready to go to the court for her running career. But most of all he was always by Kristen's side and celebrated who she was. I'm also utterly in love with the positive light that support groups have been broadcasted in. Support groups or even one or two people from a support group can mean the world when it comes to personal growth and development which is something that sadly very few books portray.
It's just a beautiful story of how an inersex girl struggles to find her identity and a place in the society.
That being said please know that it has trigger warnings for homophobia, transphobia, cancer, assault, parent death and maybe some other minor stuff
