Quicksilver by Callie Hart
4.0
The Spice Girls, voted on this for the month and I enjoyed it a lot. It started to redeem my faith in reading books that have quite a bit of hype around them which I am so grateful for, I read a lot of disappointments in the past. (queue not liking assistant to the villain) The writing in this book, the way Callie tells this story just tickled my brain in such a good way. I love a main character that is strong despite what they've been through. A survivor. Saeris is opinionated in the best way. As a video game girlie the story telling made me feel like I was in an elder scrolls game. Just twisted enough you can’t wait to see what happens next. I thought we were given enough detail that I could easily imagine everything that was happening. I especially enjoyed the addition of the fox in this book.
Quicksilver has so many good elements in it: Epic fantasy romance, fae, humans, and vampires, battles, alchemy & magic, found family, and the spice isn’t excessively heavy, and while there is spice in the book it made sense to the overall story.
A spoiler free synopsis of this book: Saeris lives in a world where water is more precious than gold. The story opens up to Saeris in a bit of an altercation with a guardian. A term used for the selected guards of the queen. Her goal is to steal his gauntlet, escape back to The Third Ward where she lives, and eventually fence that off and hopefully find a better life for her and her brother. Things don’t go according to plan and she finds herself on the brink of execution before she unintentially reopens a quicksilver gateway freeing Kingfisher. Things only escalate from there when Kingfisher takes Saeris back with him to fae territory realizing she’s an alchemist and he is in desperate need of one. Saeris knew there was something special about her, but she didn’t know what it meant just that she had the ability to manipulate metal.
Four Stars because I did not want to put this book down and it touched on so many things that I love. I will be continuing this series.
