This is the second book in the Gods from Oblivion series, a dark fantasy romance about a human woman (with magic) in a world of gods, elves and fae. There are numerous very dark elements to this story, as well as a few spice scenes, so please read the trigger warnings.
Tropes and themes include:
✨Shadow daddy & mommy
✨Love triangle
✨Antihero FMC
✨(Almost) everyone is morally gray
✨Possessive & overprotective MMC
✨Political intrigue
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
The Lovely: I love the MMC, Death, not only because he’s a shadow daddy (duh) but for how imperfect he is when it comes to the FMC. You can tell from his POVs he does love and care for her, genuinely does, and wants to protect her. But, he’s absolutely horrid in how he shows her those feelings, still driving her away. I love the tension this creates between the two.
The Mundane: This second book felt like a very different vibe from the first book. Book one was full of angst and trauma, with a good heap of romance, whereas book two felt lighter on the romance and didn’t pack the emotional punch. I can see one reason for this but can’t elaborate without spoiling. I’m hoping in book three we return to that emotional romance that I loved book one for.
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Well, the FMC is still a ball of fire and possibly even more angry than before. I definitely wasn’t expecting the final twist at the ending and I have a fair amount of rage at a certain character for continuing to keep secrets. Like, really, this could have been prevented buddy. Ugh. I am anxious to see how the “situation” is fixed, hopefully in book three.
