This is the second book I have read by Rose Tremain. The descriptions of life during the reign of Charles II are beautiful and gripping. I wanted to love this book but I just didn’t find myself caring enough about the characters to get truly invested, and although individual elements of the plot were engaging I was left unsatisfied by the overall arc of the plot.
