Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar

3.5

This is a very tough rating to make. On one hand, this author can write…he’s a poet first and foremost. It’s not necessarily my preferred style but I can appreciate the talent. The characters in this debut novel are interesting but I felt short-changed because there were multiple POVs from different timelines that took me away from them too frequently. My other issue with the book is that it lacked cohesion, which really made it difficult to immerse myself in it. I can see why this book has won accolades and why people love it, but it wasn’t an instant hit for me.
