Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

4.0

When Athena Liu, the literary mastermind, dies from a tragic accident, her so-called “friend”, June Hayward, steals her unpublished manuscript, drafts it, and publishes it as her own. To escape from her unsuccessful past in literature, June publishes this manuscript under the ambiguous name Juniper Song.

But when evidence is brought to light about June’s theft, she withdraws further into her immoral behaviours to keep what she did a secret. How far will she go to keep her newfound fame and fortune? Very far, indeed.

This book was captivating! The plot was so interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the publishing industry (especially the prejudices and microaggressions towards people of colour). I also found June to be such a fascinating character. She is truly awful and every time you think she is going to come clean and make amends, she does the opposite and does something far more sinister instead!
Kuang’s writing in this is simple yet effective, leaving the reader devouring multiple chapters at a time!
