The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

5.0

Midnight Library is a place between Life and Death, with infinite books, each representing a different version of your life. We follow Nora, who's been through a rough patch in her life and enters the library when she decides to die.

The concept is what got me into reading it. Nora paints her life as something abysmal and lacking. So I was curious as to what possibilities she'd have. Each of these lives were presented in short chapters and every time my interest was piqued. Everyday I'd get back to discover a new version of Nora.

But soon, I started wondering if she'd ever settle for one. She had exhausted all the obvious choices at this point, and she wasn't satisfied. That's when I realized the author was about to do a full circle moment. Once I realized this, I knew the other chapters were going to be fillers, just to give us the variety.

Then the perfect life chapter happened. It was mildly concerning how neither Nora nor us, the readers, gave any thought to Ash's kindness until the very end. But I almost wanted her to stay there. It was such a good life, yet she had no right to it and I knew she was going back to her root life.

The ending was sweet. The little note she wrote after emerging back to life and her reunion with her brother actually moved me to tears. I love how she came back all energetic and ready to tackle life. Having seen the potential she has, it became really easy for Nora to avoid fear and do the things she loves.

I understand for someone dealing with similar feelings, it might read like a cheesy story. But for others, it might end up being reassuring that things would be right after all. I guess it's not a book for everyone but if you need a reassuring message, this book would surely do that.
