I almost DNF this book. I thought it was romanticising a cult, and I stopped at 25 pages.. but I started reading it again a month later, and OH MY!! It so much more! The FMC is brainwashes along with a couple of other characters. But the whole point of the book is to "wake up" and realise what Serendee really is all about. 
Maybe read the tw if you have some.
