Rizos by Claribel A. Ortega
5.0
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a review.
Rizos is a middle-grade graphic novel that shows us Marlene’s journey on embracing her curly hair.
The artwork was amazing. Marlene is a young Dominican girl who has thick, curly hair. Every week her mother makes her go to the salon to get it straightened so she can look more professional and “look her best”. This book brought back so many memories. Marlene doesn’t feel like herself with the straight hair. She tries to figure out how to please her mother, not get bullied and feel comfortable with herself. I'm very happy that this book exists and highly recommend it to any young readers who will be able to relate to Marlene's feelings about her hair and how society views it.
