Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood

4.5

Why do I wanna cry??? I knew I was going to love this book just based on the cover & it's been one of my most anticipated reads for a while & Hazelwood did not disappoint!

The relationship between Mal & Nolan was just so compelling for me & the chess rivalry really fucking worked for me man😭 I was eating that shit up BIG TIME

Like i'm saurrr sorry but the magnetism & competitiveness you feel sitting across from your opponent (the person you may or may not be in love with) ??? Is this not the cutest book ever? If you say no you're obviously lying

I know nothing about chess but this book was seriously the most fascinating in that regard, I want to learn how to play eventually so reading about it so much genuinely just fueled my want to learn :33

I loved the slowburn & the tension, I loved the conflict, & most importantly I loved the resolution! The ending actually made me feel things ><

This was such a quick heartwarming read for me & I really loved the dynamic between our mcs, them knowing each other so well & their chemistry just made me swoon!

I know a lot of people HATE how many pop culture references are in this book &....is it overkill? Oh absolutely! But I never gave a fuck I enjoyed this book all the same!!

There's also the more talked about part of Hazelwood's book where it's been said that her male main characters are basically copy paste. Do I agree? Perhaps. Do I want that to change? No absolutely not, I love the recipe pls keep it coming! The tall dark & brooding grump man just does it for me everytime thanks!

I wasn't a big fan of Hazelwood after The Love Hypothesis so I subconsciously stopped reading from her after that but after my most recent read from her (Love, Theoretically) I've decided to keep giving her a try considering I really loved that book & i'm so glad that's exactly what I've been doing! I'm really happy I picked up Check & Mate!

Hazelwood's characters are often witty & sarcastic & have depth to them that make them feel real! Her writing style is just so funny & enthralling! I can't wait to read more by her
