The Sweetness Of Life by Paulus Hochgatterer
3.0
An interesting crime novel set in Austria which appears is the first in a series. It introduces us to two principal characters, a child psychiatrist (Horn), with a cello paying wife who seems a little unstable, he is overworked with a curious array of patients, and a world weary detective (Kovacs) with an interesting sex life and was an engaging character. The first chapter sees a young child staying at her grandfathers home, she witnesses the results of a brutal crime and is referred to Horn as she now mute. The investigation then sets off and we meet various characters in the town who could be the criminal.
Overall I enjoyed the book and the interaction of psychiatrist and detective was sufficiently novel and intriguing to make me want to try more- however I found the last few chapters very confusing and I am still a little at a loss as to exactly what happened!!
