The Name-Bearer by Natalia Hernandez
4.0
I don't really write reviews but this book is very conflicting to me. I rated it 4 stars simply for the vibe bc it was an easy read both as an ebook and as an audiobook, i personally flew through it rather fast and somehow it made me wanna continue and know more.
But technically and objectively, I'd rate it lower because it read like a fairytale or memoir of the name-bearer while i feel the premise and what happens in the book doesn't call for this style of narration. The protagonist honestly didn't feel developed enough and i wish she had been, during the danray arc i kept wishing for some steadfast character development considering the amount of time she spends at the temple. I think the different dynamics between the characters had great potential and could have been explored more, and the book overall read like it suits a younger audience than maybe intended, it is YA but even the part where the main character is aged up is written the same way with just some events added that make it a little darker.
It is a very descrptive book on the first half, dialogue is scarse in the first half of the books and i kind of wish it had been a little longer to flesh out some scenes and dynamics. I also think the book needed more editing to avoid some repetitions and small mistakes i noticed in my ebook version.
The audiobook actually did the same faiytale-ish narration with more tonal emphasis and I think it added even more to the book feeling more juvenile, more than the book on it's own.
I'm gonna read the second book and hope that it is more developed and fleshed out because the premise of this series is very interesting and has potential.
