The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

So cute! Loved all the characters, even the kids. The romance subplot was adorable as hell. I feel like more time could’ve been spent on the whole ‘tearing down bureaucracy from the inside’ thing but I understand this was more about Linus’s personal journey than anything much larger. I’m just pleased there’s such a wholesome little book where the MC is gay and the whole plot doesn’t revolve around it. We’re still somehow in the renaissance of gay media and every book with lgbt characters seems to harp on that constantly, which I get, but it’s also exhausting. The only downside to this book for me was the language. It was incredibly and often distractingly simplified. A lot of simple sentences, which are effective when used sparingly, but the constant use made everything feel a little like a kids book (See spot run.) Everyone I know who read this book listened to it, so perhaps that makes a difference. I may have to do that if I ever get any time.
