A Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa

5.0

⠀⠀⠀⠀ ↠ | four and a half stars

⠀⠀i really enjoyed this—not as much as the first (hence why i could not justify giving it five stars)—but i really loved experiencing this.

⠀⠀i really don’t have anything truly negative to say about this. one thing that bugged me ever so slightly was the repeated use of the word “mate”. i completely understand why it was used as often as it was, but that doesn’t mean i wasn’t a little annoyed with it. my main issue with it was simply the fact that it wasn’t always used in a natural way—almost like laura thalassa went out of her way to say it. but, in all honesty, this is my only compliant.

⠀⠀as for the content & plot, the main reason this wasn’t a five star read, i really enjoyed this taking place in the otherworld. i loved all of the events and mundane happenings. with that said, i missed the the banter callie and des had in the first book. again, i get that that was more angsty because of the unresolved tension but i would have liked to see more banter. with that said, i did love to see callie & des in a more mundane light. i still love their relationship. i will forever applaud laura thalassa for including temper in this! she added a lot to the story... although she seems rather stereotyped. i’m not sure if this is due to limited interactions, but she is still a really enjoyable character. seeing her powers in action was super cool, too.

⠀⠀the plot was really fascinating, too. i didn’t read the synopsis before jumping into this so i had no idea where this was going to take us. i liked learning about des’ kingdoms via a tour—it was a really natural way to world build (although i would’ve appreciated a little bit more). i liked meeting the new kingdoms, but i wish we got to know just a bit more about all of the rulers. yeah, they were i significant, but it would have been a nice way to learn more about fae aross the otherworld. the overarching problem was done well and in a way it can carry to the finale. i did predict a few things about this, but i’m not mad about it. in this case, i would’ve rather predicted what i did than for the author to throw huge curve balls that don’t make sense. that aside, the execution was very well done and done in a way i couldn’t guess it all.

⠀⠀overall, i really, really enjoyed this. when i get around to rereading this series (yes, we’re already planning on doing so) i won’t dread this book by any means. this was definitely different than the first book, but it’s not a bad different. i’ll be interested to see where the third and final book takes us.
