It is impossible to know how many times I've reread this trilogy. It was not my first fantasy novel (it wasn't even my first Dragonlance novel. That honour goes to Dragons of a Fallen Sun, but let me tell you, without the context of the previous books, that book was more confusing than anything). But it was one of my first fantasy novels, and it sparked my love for the entire genre. And for the rest of the Dragonlance books.
I can say that this is the fourth time I've read this book since I started keeping a record of the books I've read, back in 2007, when I was 19. And this time, joy of joys, is because it was assigned reading for an Honours University class, and I have never been more stoked to do the reading for any class.
Does it have issue? It has so many issues. But even as early as the next book in the series, it begins to improve rapidly. Some of the issues are due to the writing itself. And some of them are to do changing moral compasses, and people becoming more aware of problems with it. But I will say that as a little girl in the 90s reading her first real fantasy novel, it was nice that the female characters had agency and personality and like, purpose, as opposed to most of the other fantasy novels that I read back then (and especially for ones that were published in the 80s), even if they are sometimes just Sexy.
Anyway, you can pull my love for Dragonlance out if my cold, dead hands. I love it.
