Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

5.0

“Hate cannot be fought with hate. Evil cannot be conquered by darkness. Only love has the power to conquer them both.”

Sybella managed to escape her life and enter the convent of St. Mortain. She took up her role there willingly, as she is fuelled by the killing she does to serve St. Mortain. But, her convent returns her to the life she managed to escape from. Her father's brutality and anger scares her and she hates living within the same walls as him. However, she manages to find a new ally who helps her escape that life.

Did you love [b:Grave Mercy|9565548|Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1)|Robin LaFevers|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320269319s/9565548.jpg|14452295]? Then you will definitely love this. I preferred Dark Triumph, and I think it is because I loved Sybella more. There was also less politics in Dark Triumph as there was in the first book, yet it was still as engrossing as the first. There was more focus on the character, and her development. To me, Sybella was a more interesting character than Ismae, and I much preferred reading about her. I did enjoy the little appearances of Ismae and Duval, but I really did love Sybella. She was so strong and brave, despite being scared out of her mind sometimes. She had that vulnerability that I really admire, but she dealt with it really well. She was so full of anger and hatred, but eventually learned to love. She was so passionate and loyal to a fault, and she really did care about the others at the convent, and she was willing to go back to protect them.

Dark triumph was such a thrilling and roller coaster of a book that I just couldn't stop turning the pages. At nearly 500 pages, I thought it was going to drag, but it went by so fast, and never once lost my attention.

The romance! I loved it. Beast is a great character and he really captured my heart. He is so dangerous in battle, and so strong and rough, but when he was with Sybella, he was so gentle with her, and I really liked that. I liked how it was such a slow development. It really warmed my heart how much they cared for each other. He didn't treat her like she was some fragile toy and he fought side by side with her like an equal and I really loved that.

There was some great character development. Sybella finally understanding herself and learning more about what she does. Accepting that the convent are misguided and it was all just done so fantastically. Robin LaFevers really is a great writer, and I will picking the next book up when it is out.

Overall, a brilliant read, with a interesting heroine and a fantastic plot.
