Code of Conduct by April White

I can’t believe that I haven’t actually read any of April White’s books before this book; Code of Conduct, first in the Cipher Security Series and my first for the Smartypants Romance venture by a favourite author of mine; Penny Reid.
Code of Conduct is set in the Cipher Security Compnay run by our very favourite & grumpy hero from Penny Reid; Quinn (of the Neanderthal Seeks Human fame) – and we have other favourite characters (ALEX & DAN!!!) making appearance, it is our couple in spotlight – Shane and Gabriel; who end up stealing the show for me.
Shane, a PI specializes in catching cheating spouses; and with her latest case, ends up crossing paths with the giants in the security business, Cipher Security – few details makes sure that both Shane an d the Cipher Security need to work together to untangle the clues in this case together.
What Shane doesn’t seem to understand is her fascination with one of the guys, Gabriel Eze and can’t seem to agree to what’s worse; that she is fascinated with a guy in forever, or the fact that the fascination is seemingly returned with enthusiasm.
I just absolutely adore me a well written slow burn romance, and trust me, April White writes an entertaining slow burn romance, while also penning down one of the strongest female leads I had the pleasure of reading.
“You could never be normal. Extraordinary is not normal. Stunning is not normal. Brilliant is. Not. Normal.”
Shane, is intelligent, owns her attitude and personality, and doesn’t take prisoners when it comes to what she believes is her right – and thus, makes the perfect antidote to the strong yet silent, family oriented and upfront attitude of Gabriel – he was the perfect man to tackle the huge chip on Shane’s shoulder, and at the same time supporting her while she tries to fight her own demons.
Code of Conduct is a romance between two individuals who have their own demons to handle; a black man surviving and thriving in a close knit family and a lonely woman with a leg short, who has had to struggle to stand on her own feet after a traumatic past – they both have suffered their own brand of discrimination, and somehow came out stronger in the end.
This might have been my first book from April White, but Code of Conduct pretty much clinched the deal that I would pick up her book blurb unseen in the future.
