Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World by Bob Goff

3.0

Unfortunately, I wasn't nearly as impressed as I thought I would be. Love Does has been on my to-read list for months... and when I finally sat down with a copy, I was so excited for the pump up talk about love in action, passionate justice, and so on. I've heard so many people rant and rave over this book. But I just wasn't impressed.

Love Does is full of quirky stories and anecdotes that show Bob Goff as having just about the oddest and most entertaining life ever. He is the guy that you would want to sit next to and hear his life stories at a dinner party... although sometimes I was left doubtful that they were 100% true. As a writer, I know the exaggeratory slants that are so easy to make to create a funnier, more exciting story. Then again, I have no idea - they may all be completely true and accurate. It's just amazing that Bob Goff has such unbelievable stories and so many of them. (For example, he gets to the point from a phone call to the Ugandan embassy in New York City without actually realizing he was being asked to serve as a diplomat for Uganda? Really? Maybe so...)

The Christianity presented here was very happy, very feel good, and not at all very deep. I can't recall any portion of the actual Gospel being listed here. Just a lot of one-liners that are true - but shallow. There should have been more. It should have been challenging. It should have called the Christian to do radical things, not just told radical stories and made the Christian laugh and feel warm and fuzzy.

I just wasn't impressed. I don't get the hype.
