Believe it or not, I hadn't heard of @brittneyyevettegriner's ordeal of being sentenced to spend 9 years in a labor camp in Russia because she forgot to remove her *legal*, medically prescribed, vape pens with a whooping 0.7 grams of cannabis from her bag when she packed in a hurry. Add to this that she played professional basketball for Russia. 

The book recounts the horrors of her time in different prisons and ultimately the "penal colony", or labor camp. 

Her story is one of so many struggles - the one as a female athlete in the @wnba, where she was paid so little that she needed to travel to Russia to make a meaningful amount of money. There's the discrimination against her for being black, for being lesbian, and above all, the harassment she received due to her impressive height of 6'7", resulting in being assumed male too many times to count. 

I enjoyed this book because it was so honest and vulnerable, so full of tenderness for the Griner's family and wife Relle.

I think this would work wonderfully as an audiobook too if you're not up for a printed text right now.
