Out of the Shadows: Reimagining Gay Men's Lives by Walt Odets

5.0

I read this for a book club, and I'm really glad I did. I learned so much about gay men, but also about myself. I have long thought that talk therapy was just about wallowing in trauma, not about moving past it but after reading this book I have changed my opinion. I really liked his explanations about why/how talk therapy works. I also really like how he differentiates between the experiences of gay men by groupings of how old they were in relation to the AIDS epidemic. I had never really thought about the effect on gay men of living through that huge trauma--it impacted all gay men, not just men who experienced the losses personally. Actually, there are so many things he brought up that I hadn't thought about. I expected that this book would help me to understand the experience of gay men better, and it really did, but it also gave me a lot of insights into my own life. I highly recommend this book for any adult. I listened to it as an audiobook narrated by Will Damron and highly enjoyed it as an audiobook.
