Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

3.0

I had been recommended this book after watching Dark (German Netflix Series). Naturally, I had high expectations but I am disappointed.

This wasn't for me but is recommended to people who are very new to multiverse concepts and would like to know what the heck a Schrodinger Cat means!

*****SPOILERS AHEAD*****

The premise of the book is cool but the direction it took at several points was easily predictable and even had flaws.

1. Jason ends up in a different place that looks like it's his world but isn't. Now, why does a genius take ages to figure out what this means?!

2. The science behind the box and the whole Schrodinger Cat concept was explained really well. Just when I was wondering how are they going to stop a human from decohering themselves, they bring a compound. I know! It's a book and they can't say more than that, but convenient much?

3. I refuse to believe Jason1 was able to reach his home with just 24 ampoules, that's not how infinite possibilities work!

4. The one place where I was shocked was when multiple Jason1 arrived back. I had not anticipated this. It was freaky to read about so many Jason1 communicating over chat. But here again, I was left thinking, why are they fighting and killing over Daniela? Shouldn't there be multiple versions of her too? Letting our narrator Jason1 leave with his family was cheesy and convenient at best.

5. This part irks me the most. If Jason1 split into multiple versions, why aren't there more versions to Jason2? Why didn't we more of him arriving and stopping Jason1 from succeeding?

The dialogues were okay at the beginning but became increasingly cheesy. There were some emotional moments but it didn't make me question my existence (something that a lot of reviews here have mentioned). The book took me a while to finish as well!

Still 3 stars, you ask? I enjoyed reading it despite being slow paced and having flaws. The multiverse and quantum concepts were explained well. The premise itself is chilling, as who would think their life could be snatched away by a different version of themselves?! The feeling that I leave with is to appreciate my life more.
