“Stories were wild, wild animals and went off in directions you couldn’t expect.”
I suppose I should have had some idea of what to expect when I saw someone list A Monster Calls as ‘a book that broke them’ but I was wholly unprepared for the depth of emotions I would feel in such a short time.
The fantastical elements of the book are extremely well done and perfect for any middle school aged reader. The monster is such a fantastic character and the voice that brings him to life in the audiobook is just what I imagined.
As is so often the case, the real horror comes not from this fantasy, but from reality. The book follows Conor O’Malley and does an amazing job of putting you in Conor’s shoes, feeling every bit of his denial, hope, anger, love, hurt, and helplessness.
As a mom, I found myself torn between Conor’s character and that of his mum. I felt the pain of each so acutely, I could feel my chest tighten as I listened, and the writing was so beautifully raw that I couldn’t stop the tears.
This book gets all the stars, but if you read or listen to it, it might shatter your heart. It certainly did mine😭
Stories are important, the monster said. They can be more important than anything. If they carry the truth.
