The author coins the term ‘slasher noir’ for this book and that’s a very apt description, if a little understated, so I’m gonna expand on that with my interpretation. Dead Girl Blues is a very well written, slasher mystery that journeys through the dark world of snuff films. It takes the classic whodunnit, guts it, and turns it on its ear. It’s gruesome, violent, gory, intense, and dark. I’m not trying to scare you off, but this book is not for the faint of heart. Let me say it this way...if it were a movie, I might not be able to watch it👀

The beginning of this book grabs ahold of you and it just never lets go. Several times while reading I found myself talking to the characters, just like a slasher movie. At one point I even said, “Noooooo!  Don’t go in there!”; that’s how cinematic this book is. It has a great flow, and characters you wanna root for, even if you don’t like them all that much. There was a brief period where I thought the plot might have been a little too nearly sewn together, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. At all. And I absolutely love the Scottish dialogue and the LGBTQ+ representation🏳️‍🌈

Did I mention it was bloody?  I mean, like weapons and body parts galore kind of bloody🔨🪓🔪  And the ending!?!  That’s what took it to a 5 star rating for me. It was bloody perfect👌🏼

The best way to explain how I felt about this book is probably just to say that I bought Night Shoot and The Forgotten Island, then preordered Maggie’s Grave so I could have all of Sodergren’s works before I even wrote this review. If you love horror and aren’t too squeamish, make Dead Girl Blues your next read!
