If you can get halfway through this book, you’re in for a ride. The first half’s build-up was good, but it wasn’t until the second that I was on the edge of my seat, desperate to know what was coming. I couldn’t have predicted the majority of what followed. This was the kind of book that had me side eyeing every single character and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Outside of our FMC I couldn’t trust anyone. This was dark, twisted, and liberating. We got to see Òdòdó come to terms with harsh truths and make difficult decisions. She was immensely flawed and I felt like I was experiencing this with and through her at times. What made this book so hard was being on the wrong side of history as the reader, because I’m so used to being in the heads of characters who want to be perfect and preservative. This was a rollercoaster for sure, and I’m very happy it was a standalone book. As a reader, you have to take a back seat in this one (which I had no issues with because I do that anyway for all the books I read).
The only thing that didn’t have a full circle moment for me was the incorporation of the gods/goddesses. There was a subtle appearance that didn’t seem important by the end of the book because there was no correlation. I don’t want to give too much away, but I thought there would’ve been more to that aspect of the story. That was the only thing that felt hollow. Other than that, I closed the book while nodding profusely. This book tackled important topics and issues of greed, power, control, oppression, abuse, and so much more. Overall, it was a time filled with tension and uncertainty, but it’s the kind of story that will stay with me for a while. I highly recommend immersive reading for this one and definitely take your time.
