This book just didn’t do it for me. I feel bad for saying it because I was super excited to read this after reading her children’s works in the past (the “Akata” series, Ikenga) all which I loved. And I’m an adult contemporary person so this book would have fit right up my alley. I respect the author for their take on Afrofuturism- a woman with cybernetic organs crossing paths with a traditional tribal herdsmen to take down an evil Corporation- but everything about this book felt so sluggish and like something is missing. The plot felt ‘empty’. For instance the synopsis makes it seem like there’s this Bonnie and Clyde element - the girl and guy being fugitives and escaping the government, what will they do next - but the book was not like that at all - neither an action or a thriller or a mystery- and I’m not sure what to make of it.
Again maybe I’m just not used to the author writing adult fiction books with a slower tempo? But It was a slow read for me, so slow I switched to audio version and thankfully the audio version was better in making the story come to life, but I didn’t enjoy the book like I thought I would.
