Damned Souls by Kate King, Jessa Wilder

3.0

The series started out strong and was pretty decent, but there were some things along the way that I have complaints about.

1) It was also marked as MM Romance, but really there was no *romance*. There was occasional fooling around during spicy scenes, but it was superficial and almost “gay for FMC’s attention”. The story would have been much better if we expanded on Beck and Rush’s mutual attraction. Bi boys are the best! Let them be bi louder!

2) In fact there’s a bit of a “bury your gays” thing in this book. The only couple that practiced a real MM Romance were shot.

3) They walked through a sewer, got filthy from it, and went straight into a sex scene!! Not even a sexy “haha what if we washed up together” shower beforehand, just immediately putting sewer germy hands in orifices. The smell alone had to have turned them off!! And this was supposed to be a significant “they’re all together for the first time” scene! I couldn’t relax knowing that Rae was getting the worst yeast infection from this.

4) I was genuinely stressed at how much they didn’t care if Sophie could walk in on them at any time. The poor girl has gone through so much… give her a basement apartment with a separate exit or something. With sound proof walls.

5) Rae mentions that she’s “on the pill”, but is often escaping to safe houses in nothing but her pajamas. There was no way she somehow stashed birth control pills with her at the beginning of book 2. I really thought this was gonna end in a pregnancy scare or something. Just give her an IUD or something!

6) If you had a tracker necklace, why would it only work in one brief moment when you pressed a button? Why would it not be tracking all the time?

7) You’re a major city in East Coast USA and you have NO people of color in this story?? *Maybe* one side character? (Even that I’m not sure of.) If only Rae and Nico are true
family lineage Irish/Italian mafia members, then any of the other book characters should be free to be a PoC! American cities are diverse!! Even in NE America!

8) Last point is silly, but Raegan, even with different spelling, is just too close to US President Ronald Reagan to be considered a sexy name.

If it weren’t for those things, this would be one of my favorite RHs. I love women in charge as the premise for a RH, and Rae is the best.
