Behind You Is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Darraj

3.75

This is a collection of nine short stories exploring the lives of three Palestinian-American families living in Baltimore. Each story covers different themes of the Palestinian diaspora, and in the end, all short stories tie together. I enjoyed the book's second half more than the first half, but overall, I enjoyed this read. I connected with this sense of division the stories showcase between the older generation and the younger generation, which I think many first-gen’s will find relatable. This book explores the migrant experience and the struggle to fit in, as well as an array of topics ranging from age, gender, class, religion, and love.
