The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation by Ian Mortimer

5.0

Ian Mortimer does a great job of bringing Edward III to life. It follows a wonderfully clear chronological order, he's constantly returning to his thesis and his writing is clear and succinct. Not only that, but in some spots it is so wonderfully vivid that you can feel the amount of research that went into this book. You feel as though you are there; by the time of Edward's death at the end of the book, you feel as though you've lost something too.

Startlingly vivid, my only detraction from the book (and this is in no way the author's doing) is the - to me - extensive amount of typos in the E-book format that I read. In some places the typos were silly to the point of stupid. In others it was a single letter that actually changed the meaning of the sentence and I had to stop and think and realize the typo. I don't know if this is the case in all E-book versions of this book or not. I borrowed it through Amazon Prime and I am not pleased with their lack of care in proofreading. Saying it was read for free through Prime rental is also not an excuse, seeing as I pay for prime.

But this book was excellent! I highly recommend it!
