Normal Women: Nine Hundred Years of Making History by Philippa Gregory

4.0

On Fable I marked my feelings about this book as unimpressed but that isn’t because I didn’t enjoy this. It was a thorough in depth look at how the patriarchy has oppressed women (and that includes trans women obvs) for 900 years on the British Isles.

I’m unimpressed that the wage gap which started in the 1300s is still a thing to this day, and I’m heartbroken for the women who have come before me on this island that were treated like objects to be used at men’s pleasure rather than human beings with thoughts and feelings.

This is a behemoth of a book to undertake but it’s important work that people should read. Women of all colours shaped this island whether they were born here, travelled here for a better life or forced here through slavery - they should be written back into our national identity and Gregory has helped to make this happen.
