Memorial by Bryan Washington
4.0
A darkly funny, astute, poignant look at a complicated relationship between two young men, juxtaposed with their relationships with their parents. Ben and Mike live in Houston, where Ben, who is Black, teaches at a daycare, and Mike works as a cook. The book begins as Mike makes a spontaneous decision to fly to Osaka to visit his dying, semi-estranged father at the same time as his mother intends to visit from Japan, leaving Ben to live with her. It's a fast, accessible read but crafted with care and nuance. I appreciated how the book hits you in the feels at a few points, and how Washington shows the messiness of the relationships, instead of trying to smooth things over in a way that could feel contrived.
