The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
5.0
I thought this book was magical and wondrous! The main aspect I appreciate about this book is the imagination. It was a vivid feast for the senses and I felt immersed in the circus while reading. I feel as if the book has been advertised wrongly as it is not a love story, per se, and more about the circus itself. I also liked how it included the downsides to the magic and how it affected the characters negatively as some stories neglect to mention that side of things. I have never read a book like this before and probably never will again. There are so many characters intertwined into the story and I loved how they all were vital and important for the story and for the circus itself. In terms of Marco and Celia and the game, I never really seems like a game where they have to compete and win, it seems like a showcase of power and ability instead. They never had the choice, they had to play the game, and I like the idea that they played by their own rules and shaped their own futures. Also, it's such a cool idea, a circus as a playing board, so much better than grids and rounds and turns and so much more whimsical and dreamlike. If Le Cirque de Rêves existed, I would probably be a rêveur!
