Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell

3.0

I’m not sure how I felt about this book. After waiting SO long for Rowell to write something new, part of me feels like this was a cop out. The first two stories I’d already read in other short story anthologies so that was a bit of a disappointment. Then towards the end of the book she did extension stories of characters from Fangirl, Attachments and the Simon Snow series. I felt like that was a bit of a cheat too. To me, it seems like maybe she’s having a hard time coming up with new material, hence the visit back to old characters.

I also had a hard time figuring out the audience for this book. Lots of the stories focused on teens but then the extension stories for Fangirl and Attachments both featured characters in their 30s and late late 40s. It was such a mixed bag.

I hope she creates another original novel - not anything fantasy based either because I think she’s strongest writing realistic fiction.
