How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water by Angie Cruz

5.0

Write it down: Angie Cruz is a talented writer. Second-person POV, this book is about regrets, generational trauma, immigration, motherhood, poverty, late middle adulthood, and loss.

You're the job counselor of Cara Romero, a 56-year-old, unemployed Dominican living in an NYC apartment for the past 2 decades. You'll meet with her for 12 weeks in a row to learn about her story and, hopefully, find her long-term employment. Bills are piling up, and she is nearing the end of her unemployment benefits. Your job here is quite a real deal.

Reminders: She drinks a lot of water, so keep plenty on hand. And possibly some Kleenex—she'll require it (just in a few sessions, don't worry, she's tough as nails). You'll also be handling Cara's legal documents and exams in between. Please be gentle with her. She's not the easiest lady, but she went through a lot—like a real LOT.

Good luck! You'll love her pastelitos. Punto final.
