"she's such a spectacular woman - by which I mean she, herself, is a spectacle. But she's also deeply, deeply human. And it is simply impossible for me, in this moment, to remain objective" (forgot the page but start of Ch 58)
"I pretend that I am still captivated by Evelyn Hugo. Because, despite everything, I still am." (p. 373)
How to possibly distill down Evelyn Hugo to a simple review. I thought this was a book about polygamy and the concept of multiple loves, and I couldn't be further from (and yet... in some ways closer to) the truth. This book deserves the hype it received, for its conversation on the (im)possibility of redemption where morality is concerned, the depiction of love in all its forms (romantic and platonic; hetero, bi, gay, lesbian).
"You're an idealist and a romantic, and you have a beautiful soul. And I wish the world was ready to be the way you see it. I wish that the rest of the people on earth with us were capable of living up to your expectations. But they aren't. The world is ugly, and no one wants to give anyone the benefit of the doubt about anything... We will be destitute... I cannot let it happen to you. I will do whatever I can to prevent you from living that way... I love you too much to let you live only for me" (171)
