Dead Beat by Jim Butcher

5.0

I really enjoyed this book in the series. In some ways, Dead Beat might be the best up to this point. Jim Butcher does what he does best with a well-constructed plot that moves fast and provides some great twists.

A highlight for me in this book is the introduction of the White Council’s wardens. So often, the wizards Harry deals with leave a terrible impression that make you wonder why Harry is willing to associate with any of them. So many of the wizards in the wardens finally give a reason to cheer for the White Council, but the wardens also deliver something long overdue in this series: Anastasia Luccio. Luccio leads the wardens, and I truly believe she’s the first female character in this series who isn’t reduced to eye candy, potential romantic interest or rescue bait. Luccio hits the scene and takes charge. In many ways, Luccio is what I wish for Karrin Murphy. So often, the story mistreats Murphy, and even in this book...sigh...she deserves better.
