A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

Actual rating 5/10.

Much better than the first book imo. Overall, I did enjoy the dynamic between Feyre and Rhys but much like in the first book, I felt like there was a lot of cringey or unnatural dialogue that took me out of the moment. I also think this book could have benefited a lot from Rhys being in ACOTAR more. The tid bits of him you get in book one are shallow, and it’s written so that hes more or less a stereotypical jerk. Thats all well and good but there is a shift to the opposite end of that spectrum almost as soon as ACOMAF starts. 95% of this book you root for him or see him as an outright good person - the change was too drastic, too quick

I enjoyed the time spent with the Inner Circle of the Nightcourt and in Velaris, which all felt much more lively than anything in the Spring Court. The moment of Rhys telling Feyre she was his mate was nice although he definitely took certain things in book 1 and 2 way too far in order to keep his bad guy persona alive. The painting of the night sky, “I’ve been looking for you”, etc were nice touches although I again wish we had more Rhys at earlier points to make this more impactful.

On Tamlin, the dude is lame. He’s lame in book one. However, I do feel like a lot of his villainizing happens just to make Rhys look better; he does of course prove himself to be lamer than ever at the end though.

Feyre has not won me over at all and that is one of my biggest gripes with the series so far. I haven’t really found myself rooting for her but the end of book two seems to be setting up her get back, so, I am hopeful. Side note - her dad being off sailing/trading is just so funny to me bc it’s brought up like a handful of times and has had nothing to do with anything yet so please please please let it be something interesting.
