Whip Smart by Melissa Febos
5.0
This memoir comes with an attention-grabbing premise that was probably even more titillating when it was first released nearly 15 years ago. Febos describes her double life in the early 2000s as both college student and professional dominatrix and explores every corner of her own personal philosophy of early adulthood in the process. While the details of her dominatrix work are the undisputed headline of the memoir I came away thinking it was just as much the story of her attempts to overcome drug addiction. She struggles to get sober and asks if anyone could know her true self when so much of her life is censored or guarded depending on whether she is at work, with family, or using. Admittedly, some of the descriptions of her work may be uncomfortable to learn about even for the most sex positive readers but I think that the core content is worth going through. Are addiction and dungeon work unrelated interludes in a wide story of the author’s life or does each experience leave a permanent impression of every aspect of her future? If you read this book you’ll learn the answer to the question and I think you’ll find it’s worth the read.
