An exploration of some of the female figures from the Greek myths and how their representation has changed through time.

This book is an excellent takedown of how so many of the women in Greek myths are represented - usually as scapegoats for men’s problems - but I particularly enjoyed reading about how this has changed over time to get us to how we view these storied women today. Not only is itit fascinating and well-researched, but it’s worth picking this one up for the writing alone - it is dryly funny, at times (justifiably) angry, and an all-round brilliant to read. My favourite chapter was probably the Amazons (who doesn’t love badass warrior women?), but honestly they were all interesting - from the well-known figures (Pandora, Helen of Troy) to the perhaps less-so (Clytemnestra, Jocasta), all of the women were considered multi-faceted and complex. I do wish there had been photos included of the various artworks and artefacts that were referred to, mostly because I’m a little too lazy to Google them all. Funny and informative, this is worth reading if you have any interest at all in Greek mythology or redressing maligned female characters.
