Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches by Audre Lorde

challenging emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

My favorite essay of the collection is a toss up between “The Uses of Anger” and “Sexism: An American Disease in Blackface.” With that said, the first essay was a great way to begin, transporting me to Russia through Lorde’s observant, conversational voice. And the final essay in Sister Outsider, “Grenada Revisited” brought me on the verge of tears. Especially as a white woman, I appreciated hearing about feminism and the fight for equality from the perspective of not only a Black woman, nor a Black lesbian woman, but from a Black lesbian woman raising a son and daughter with her white partner in an oppressive capitalist society. I will not insult Lorde by saying I fully understand the oppression and obstacles she experienced in her lifetime on a daily basis, nor any woman of color or LGBTQIA+ member in modern times, but it did remind me to be conscious that my experience does not represent the majority. A beautifully powerful and elegant work of art, and one I will carry with me always.
