The Mercenary and the Mortician by Alexandra St Pierre

4.0

WOW! I was not expecting to have so many adorable, lovable characters in a dark MM romance, and the coziest found family I’ve seen in a year!

Absolutely read the trigger warnings and take them seriously, Cal and Ryan our lovable golden retriever and steady serious MMCs go through a LOT and their love story involves a lot of working through their traumas and rebuilding themselves. Their banter and Cal’s general antics help keep the tone light but I was surprised at the depth of such intense topics covered while it managed to be a genuinely hilarious, comforting book to read.  Iris was one of my favorite background characters, an excellent excentric mom figure, a great counterpart to Ryan’s uptight nature and partner in crime to Cal. Cal is easily my favorite character, a sweet cinnamon roll who accepts everyone and does his best amidst his own problems, I just wanted to give him a big hug through the whole book!

***I especially want to put out a warning for assault and SA. There is a character who is SAed and our POV character saves her in the middle of the act. It’s a very raw scene, please be careful if you’re sensitive to this topic.  I need the next book for this character especially, my heart breaks for both of them.

As a first time reader of this author I do want to know wtf is with Ronan and the stuffed cow, that band of merry miscreants sounds entertaining.

I NEED Theo and Cass’s book, there is so much more to both of their stories and I flagged the creepy priest before reading the acknowledgments. Their little barbed moments of flirting were so cute to watch!
