I do not have words to describe the kind of feelings I had while reading this. It was a poetic and destructive trainwreck. I started with the fascination of being unable to look away from something horrifying, but I realized with increasing discomfort how much I identified with the protagonist:
I fit into spaces which already exist and contort myself to fit a shape which has been allocated for me.
I am falling through the gap between where I am and where I would like to be.
I am thankfully in a loving, committed and communicative relationship and do not crave the attention from an extremely toxic man. So on that regard, I do not resonate with her, but I can absolutely see myself falling into this kind of trap had I been younger and more impressionable.
The book also has great commentary on whiteness and colonialism, among other things. Honestly, I am in awe of how this seemingly little story about a woman unhealthily obsessing over people and the effect the obsession has on her can manage to tackle so many things so well.
