A Knock at Midnight: A Story of Hope, Justice, and Freedom by Brittany K. Barnett
5.0
Rating: 10/10, the first book in my top 10 books of 2023.
All I can say is WOW. After initially reading the book's synopsis and learning a bit about Brittany Barnett, I had really high expectations for A Knock at Midnight. Brittany Barnett has exceeded my expectations.
While studying to become a Corporate Attorney in Law school, Brittany stumbled upon Sharanda Jones's story - a single mother and business owner serving a LIFE sentence without parole for a FIRST time drug offense.
Having witnessed her own mother's addiction and incarceration, Brittany knew that she had to help Sharanda - but she didn't just stop at Sharanda. Corporate lawyer by day and pro-bono lawyer by night, Brittany was relentless in her mission to help free countless others that were serving unreasonably harsh sentences as a result of the war on drugs.
Brittany's writing style is incredibly poetic and powerful. She does an amazing job at storytelling, making you turn each page feverishly. I was left in complete admiration of Brittany once I finished her book; her compassion fueled her determination to help the victims of an unjust judicial system. Although it was terrifying to read how easily her client's freedom was stripped away from them, it gave me SO much hope in knowing that there are people out there like Brittany who are constant defenders of those who fell victim to the injustices of the American judicial system.
I cannot recommend this book enough. An absolute must-read for everyone.
**Disclaimer: This book was gifted to me by Brittany and her team at Manifest Freedom. However, my thoughts and opinions are all my own.
