Furyborn by Claire Legrand

5.0

I'll try and shorten the synopsis on the back of the book so that I can get to the actual review part:

The story follows two different women, in two different times, whose stories unbelievably intertwine. The first is Rielle Dardenne, a lady of Celdaria who exposes unnatural gifts to the people of Celdaria when her friend, the prince of Celdaria, is attacked by assassins. She is then put through trials to see if she is one of the prophesied queens, The Blood Queen or The Sun Queen. One will bring about the destruction of the land as they know it, and one will have the power to save it. But will the trials bring her salvation, or destroy her?
The second is Eliana Ferracora, a seemingly invincible bounty hunter who is doing all she can to help her family survive in a world ruled by the Undying Empire. But something is amiss in Ventera, women and girls are going missing without a trace. When Eliana's own mother gets kidnapped, she must strike a bargain with one of her marks to find her.

...Sounds crazy right? I'll be honest, I hadn't actually seen the synopsis before I actually had this copy in my hand (which I generously received from a friend who got two copies in the mail and knows I like the same books that she does :D ). And quite frankly, it wasn't exactly what I had been expecting. So when I was trolling my shelves for what to read for the month of March, I at first had second thoughts. Would this really be a book that I would want to fly through while on vacation? Or was it going to be a book that had too much to handle? I decided to take the leap anyway, and BOYYYY am I glad I did!

Now I'm not going to give away much that has to do with the story, since the finished copy won't be released until May. But I will briefly explain why I gave it 5 stars.

First off, I absolutely love Eliana's character. She is just the right amount of sassy and a very strong character. Although there was a shift in her personality that seemed a little sudden, but what can you do. Rielle, on the other hand, was done perfectly. As any character should have, there was a shift in her as well. At the beginning she was somewhat....timid? *googles definition of timid* Yes, timid, but with good reasons that I won't mention because spoilers. And to see the shift in her was definitely well done. A+ in my book.

Since these are really the only two characters mentioned in the synopsis, that is all I will say for now about characters. Maybe I will come edit my review once the finished copy is out....

Overall, the balance between the voices of the two characters was excellently done, and the story was straight forward and blended well. I didn't have any major qualms over the plot or the order of events, and I really thought that the story itself was beautifully written. This is a book I'm going to have to take a day to process before starting a new one, even though it had a satisfying "ending". (since I know there are two more books to come) I really enjoyed the world that Claire Legrand has created, and seeing it in two different times was really something special.

Guys, it comes out on May 22, 2018. Go pre-order a copy or set an alert on your phone. This is one you don't want to miss!
