I really love how grief is depicted in this book. Both Ellison and Colter are experiencing grief from two extremely different events at different times in their lives, but both result in a loss that’s significant to them. It was a wonderful journey to see them heal not only because of each other but because their love for rodeo and a portion of their life returns in a new way.
I grew up doing 4-H and everything that involves, so I was always aware of rodeo but never super familiar with it. It was fun to learn more about the different events and finally put a name to things I would watch randomly growing up. I will never totally understand every event, but I feel like I have a better understanding of what goes into several of them now.
Ellison is a badass. She’s so unapologetically herself and she doesn’t try to mold herself to the conventions of how a woman “should” act. She speaks her mind and is unafraid to be honest and blunt, and I love that. While other books I’ve read certainly have FMCs that are similar, Ellison took it to a new level I’d love to keep reading about.
