UnWholly by Neal Shusterman
3.0
It was uneven because there were so many characters to follow in this one. And the whole plot about rewinding didn’t make much sense to me when I would think parents would have issues with their children being patched together. I don’t know. The whole thing didn’t feel realistic at the 25 percent mark and I just struggled to finish. The ending was a cliffhanger and I just don’t know if I will finish the third and fourth book.
Full Review:
"UnWholly" follows Connor, Risa, and Lev in the sequel to "Unwind." A few months later with Connor and Risa hiding away with a ton of kids selected to be unwound and Lev focusing on saving the kids who are to be tithed, the sequel is mostly filler as we get a look at new characters such as Cam (who is the first to be rewound) Miracolina (kidnapped so she doesn't agree to go through with being a tithe), Starkey (selected to be unwound but also hates the kids who are not "storks" like him), and Nelson (just a black hole of hate).
I think that maybe if Shusterman had introduced one to two new characters maybe I would have liked this more, but a lot of characters we get introduced to, their motivations were just odd and I got tired of reading about them. Case in point, Starkey felt like a different version of Roland (from Unwind #1) especially with his obsession about Connor.
I did enjoy the character of Miracolina though and her interactions with Lev were great. But the chemistry and the pull of Connor and Risa together was missing. And when we get to two reveals that I saw coming about Risa I was just pretty bored with it.
Also, can we just have one YA novel that does not do a love triangle? Is that too much to ask?
The book ends on a cliffhanger that didn't feel realistic at all and I maybe just went...okay then. I may read the third and fourth books, or I may not. This series was recommended to me by one of my big bosses at my office and she loves this series, so at least I can say, yep, read book #2.
